Back in the old days we would pick up the needle on our record players and very carefully drop it on just the right spot on the album to pick out the one phrase we were trying to learn. I was about 50% successful in getting within 10 seconds or so of the spot I needed. There was no slowing it down or pausing either.
TablEdit revolutionized learning songs for me. The ability to practice one phrase, at any speed, as you see the TAB greatly sped up the process of learning. It also allowed me to develop new licks and techniques that I would never have thought of otherwise.
And that's only the basic level of use. Once I started transcribing my own TABs I not only had an easy way to communicate with the other musicians in my band, I developed a whole new understanding of music theory.
